First meeting held for WRE working group

30th November -0001

On 10 November 2017, the NTAA attended the first meeting held for a new working group, consisting of tax practitioners and representatives from various tax profession associations, established to consult on a number of issues involving work-related expenses (or 'WREs').

This consultation will:

  • consider the risks associated with clients and tax agents who claim work related expenses;
  • explore and develop initiatives and treatments to support accurate and correct return preparation; and
  • develop strategies in response to recommendations contained in the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Economics Report (released in June 2017) on the inquiry into tax deductibility.

The consultation will consider ways to improve how individual clients and tax agents self-regulate to ensure correct work related expense deductions are claimed in income tax returns.

The working group will examine the processes used by tax agents when preparing returns and providing advice to clients in relation to work related expenses, and will co-design strategies to help the tax profession uphold professional standards and assist clients to make correct claims.
